Phlebotomy Technician Program

Certified Phlebotomy technicians (CPT) work in hospitals, physician offices, group practices, independent laboratories, health maintenance organizations and public facilities.  Job responsibilities of a phlebotomy technician may include: drawing blood; preparing specimens for storage or testing; assembling equipment; verifying patients’ records.  A phlebotomist may also interview and screen donors at a blood bank.  The phlebotomist is an important part of the clinical laboratory team, whose main function is to obtain patient’s blood specimens by venipuncture and micro collection.  They usually work under the supervision of medical technologists or laboratory managers.  Phlebotomists are employed throughout the health care system – hospitals, neighborhood health centers, medical group practices, HMOs, public health facilities, veterans’ hospitals, insurance carriers and in other health care settings.  The phlebotomy technician course can be taken as a stand-alone course or as part of the patient care technician program.  Phlebotomy technician program is a 100-hour course.  Program prepares students to collect blood specimens from clients for laboratory analysis. Students will become familiar with all aspects of blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures competently and safely. Classroom work includes terminology; anatomy; physiology; blood collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and, clinical training in skills and techniques to perform puncture methods. The program also includes lab exercises and clinical externship.  Students will work with a training arm and other exercises intended to prepare them to function as entry-level phlebotomy technicians. The curriculum is designed to provide the educational information and competencies for certification as a Phlebotomy Technician.

Phlebotomy Technician (CPT 101) 100 hours

The student must accurately perform 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary sticks on live individuals to successfully graduate from the program.   The course hours also include clinical externship of 40 hours.  Upon successful completion of this program, the student is eligible to take the certification exam for phlebotomy Technician.

  • Admission requirement:

    • Must be 18 years or older prior to applying
    • Possess a high school diploma or the equivalent, such as a General Education Development (GED) test or other equivalency test or diploma and official transcript reflecting equivalent education as evaluated by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers for secondary education (if documents are not in English, a translation into English from a translation service approved in the United States for legal or governmental documents must be available upon request).
    • A copy of current completion card of Basic Cardiac Life Support, BCLS, for Health Care Providers.
    • The student must provide proof of immunization. The following immunizations are required: Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR), Varicella, TD or TDAP, all 3 doses of the Hepatitis B series, Flu Shot, and a current TB test (within the last year). If students have had a previous positive PPD test, documentation or history of treatment is required.
    • A copy of proof of personal healthcare insurance coverage which will cover the course dates classes prior to enrolling.
    • A copy of valid U.S. or Texas State Government Issued Photo I.D. (e.g. driver’s license)
    • Pass a criminal background check and drug screens.  These checks must be completed no more than 30 days before the start of the clinical experience.  Students who do not pass these two requirements will not be allowed to continue on to clinicals.
